Choosing a fertility clinic abroad is a medical decision as well as a financial and travel decision. Compare clinics using transparent evidence and make sure the proposed care is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
1. Verify the clinic
Confirm the clinic’s legal name, physical location, regulatory oversight and official contact details. Check accreditation directly with the accrediting organisation and understand which services and locations the accreditation covers.
2. Review the clinical team
Look for named clinicians, relevant specialist training, professional registration and clear responsibility for your care. Ask who reviews your case and who is available if complications or urgent concerns arise.
3. Understand the laboratory
Ask about embryology laboratory quality systems, equipment, staffing, quality assurance and how specimens are identified, stored and tracked. Request clear explanations of any additional laboratory techniques proposed for your case.
4. Interpret outcome data carefully
Check whether published figures represent live birth, clinical pregnancy or another outcome; whether they are per cycle started, retrieval or transfer; and whether age and egg source are separated.
5. Compare total costs
Obtain a written itemised quotation. Check medication, testing, freezing, storage, donor-related costs, additional procedures, cancellation terms and follow-up.
6. Assess international patient support
Understand how remote consultations, local testing, travel dates, medication, records transfer and post-treatment follow-up are coordinated. Ask for a named contact and written instructions.
7. Consider communication and informed consent
You should receive understandable information about alternatives, risks, expected benefits, uncertainties and costs. Take time to ask questions and seek a second opinion if needed.
